September’s the foundation station in beautyland.

It’s when all the brands lay out their ace bases for the cool weather to come and we pick something new to wear for autumn winter. I love it – and I know I’m not alone in my foundation season welcoming joy.

Nars, Bobbi Brown, Clarins, Shu Uemura, Guerlain, Bareminerals and Shiseido will all launch a new foundation this Autumn. We preview them here.

Launching at the end of September, Lightbulb foundation, €41.68, is Shu's answer to the lightweight longwear bases we saw from brands like Chanel and Lancome a year or so ago. Except even better. It promises an exceptional level of cover in a very fine fluid and the sponge (sold separately) can be used to amp up or down the glow, depending on how you use it. One side buffs up the pigments in the product to enhance glow, one side tamps them down, to mattify. in 14 shades, it'll be at Brown Thomas Dublin.

A Brown Thomas exclusive from September until January, the Bareminerals Ready to Go Complexion Perfection Kit, €46, comes in a variety of shade options and contains foundation, concealer and bronze and blush tones in a zippy case. Your beauty kit in one, basically.

A rich, unctuous foundation with a beautifully dewy finish, this is ideal for those with dry or mature skintypes. Glam, old-school presentation makes it not great for travel but perfect for dressing tables. In 10 shades, this is €43 and is available now.

A September launch for Guerlain, Tenue de Perfection will come in 12 shades and is a base created from volatile oils, designed to perfect the complexion and hold all day. While I haven't tried it myself, that oil formulation makes it sound not unlike Giorgio Armani's Maestro. I'm guessing this one will be near the €50 mark.

Bobbi Brown foundation fans take note: Luminous Moisturizing Treatment Foundation, €40, is a September launch from the brand that's for you if you've got dry skin. With hydrators, light-reflectors and luminisers included to give skin a lit-from-within-glow plus long-term benefits, it comes in 20 shades, with some nice pale ones included too. Oh goody!

I never thought I'd see the day but given the fact that nearly all foundations are actually pretty good these days due to formulation factors moving on so much, compacts are decent too. Nars' Radiant Cream Compact Foundation, €46, lands in September. For use wet or dry, it'll come in 20 shades and is designed deliver a glowing finish that can be built from medium to full coverage.

Taking the baton from the lovely Perfect Refining Foundation, Shiseido Sheer and Perfect foundation, €35, is a fine fluid base that is very similar in looks and texture. Designed to compliment the forthcoming Ibuki skincare range for 20-somethings upwards, it provides hydrating sheer-to-medium coverage. In eight shades, it launches on August 26th.
