I’m sure makeup crayons were a thing before the Chubby Stick, but it’s Clinique we have to thank for accelerating their popularity and making our beauty bags a happier and more joyful place.

Requiring zero artistry or co-ordination, and even less time, these sturdy sticks of colour are not only incredibly satisfying and fun to use, but could be applied by a four year old in the dark and still look grand.

As with all makeup products, not all crayons are created equal: I’m sorry Maybelline, I love you, but your Master Smoky Shadow Pencils are tough to work with and best left on the shelf. Instead, stick with one of the six super offerings below: scribble on to lips or eyes with gay abandon, blend with fingers or brushes and ta da! You’re only bleedin’ gorgeous.

ONE Smashbox Waterproof Shadow Liner, €19, Arnotts

God I love these yokes. Creamy and pigmented, they glide on smoothly and stay in place all day. The in-built smudger makes ‘em easier than pie. If you’re quick, you might still catch the limited Blackest Black (pictured) or Black Gold on counter; if not, there are six stunners in the permanent line.

TWO Catrice Pure Shine Colour Lip Balm, €5.49, chemists

To all intents and purposes this could be one of the original Chubby Sticks – it delivers a sheer, pretty sheen, with a hint of colour and a comfortable, moisturised finish. This one, My Cherry Berry, is great for applying on the go – because it’s so sheer, there’s no need to be precise. And it’s a twist-up! Run, don’t walk, to your nearest stand!

THREE Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Shadow Pencil, €19.50, Debenhams

There’s no smudger and they don’t twist up, but these babies are well worth your time inanyways. Crease proof and waterproof, use as a base for powder shadows, as eyeliner or as cream shadows and the 14-strong shade range is just ab-fab. Mushroom is a warm grey/brown with shimmer and I am in THE LOVE.

FOUR Bourjois Colour Boost, €10.99, chemists

Delivering by far the glossiest finish of any crayon I own, I’m enamoured with the bright, punchy colours of this range. I wore Peach on the Beach all summer and this one, Red Island, is already an autumn/winter fave. Plus, the co-ordinating caps make them easy to pick out of the bunch.

FIVE Clinique Chubby Stick, €19, Brown Thomas

Ah, the Chubby Stick. It will always have a place in my heart and in my makeup bag, and not least because they keep adding on to this fabulous franchise. We’ve had the original Chubbys, the Intense Chubbys and Chubby Sticks for eyes, and I’m holding out for word of Chubby Cheeks being the next in line. This here, Mighty Mimosa, is the perfect counterfoil to a heavy eye.

SIX Max Factor Wild Shadow Pencils, €8.99, Boots

If you only buy one crayon from this list, make it this one in Caramel Rage. It’s barely left my lids since I got it. With its gel like consistency and crease-resisting ways, I don’t care that it needs to be sharpened. When I look at it, everything goes all soft focus and slow-mo and I’m like actually totes emosh. Just buy it already.
