For me, a red lip is the ultimate beauty look. The Old Hollywood connotations are seductive and glamorous but, depending on the finish, red can also look modern and fresh. From raspberry to tomato, I promise there’s a shade out there for you. Me, I love all of them – indiscriminately and to distraction (I’m being distracted by one now) – but these are my belles de jour.

I’ve waxed lyrical about the velvety, ruby red hues of La Precieuse before. Six months down the line, this Chanel number is still a firm favourite – and I own A LOT of lipstick.

Red Lips Nars Cruella

The deep red shade of NARS Cruella, €25, looks amazing on all skintones and is kind to less-than-porcelain teeth. I class this as a crayon (and you know how I feel about crayons); it’s ridiculously easy to apply and has amazing staying power, too.

Red lips: Bobbi Brown Old Hollywood

I’m also enamoured with the rich, creamy charms of Bobbi Brown’s Old Hollywood lipstick. The true-red shade has a retro feel that, despite being lightweight, is opaque in one swipe. It was a limited Christmas release and the gold plastic casing speaks straight to my magpie heart.

Red Lips: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Mat in Orange Imagine

YSL launched Rouge Pur Couture Mat in Orange Imagine, €32, last autumn, but it forms part of the permanent line. The silicone enriched formula is a million miles from the drying mattes of yore – and the colour is fab on my slightly sallow complexion. It’s love.

Red Lips: Love With Ginger, from the Rimmel Moisture Renew

The slick, silky feel of In Love With Ginger, from the Rimmel Moisture Renew range, combined with its high-shine, glossy finish, have made it a much-loved companion. And at €7.99, it’s incredible value, too.

Could you pick a favourite red?
