SPF foundation stops things from getting too shiny all up in your grill
Most of us scale back our makeup in the sunshine – particularly our base – but in extreme heat, those CC creams and sheer foundations are in danger of sliding right down to your knees. As I discovered this week (FML).
That’s where high SPF foundation comes into its own – it can protect like a suncream, cover a multitude, and stop things from getting too shiny all up in your grill.
Any of the four featured deserve a place in your summer beauty bag. Fuss free and easy to apply, they offer lovely textures and finishes and are as water resistant as a kitten at bath-time.
Most importantly, they all offer broad spectrum protection against both UVA rays, which cause ageing, and UVB rays – the ones which contribute to skin cancer.
Vichy Capital Soleil Beautifying Sun Protection Compact SPF 30, €19.50
My failsafe, warm weather work pick of last summer, this comes in two shades and gives medium-to-full coverage that just won’t budge. Mattifies like a boss.
Shiseido Sun Protection Compact Foundation SPF 30, €39
Provides a medium, soft matte finish which is long lasting, and keeps sweat and oil at bay. The price is justified by the six-strong shade range (higher than most high SPF foundations), and use of skin-friendly ingredients – like rose apple leaf extract, which is rich in anti-oxidants.
Shiseido Liquid Foundation Very Water Resistant SPF 30, €39
The best pick for drier skin, this offers a more natural finish and lightweight feel than any of the compacts, while still covering imperfections. The rounded plastic, flip-top packaging is not only ergonomically pleasing, but practical, too – it’s durable, portable and very travel friendly.
La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Compact-Cream, SPF 50+, €21
With the highest SPF offering of the bunch, this one is perfect for very pale types. The kaolin in the formula also makes it a good pick for oily complexions while soothing agents, and a specially designed sponge, also cater for sensitive skin.
Vichy before and after. Good, huh?
A final note on application: the compacts all come with sponges, which are handy for touch-ups on the go. But for a more natural finish, a buffing brush is perfect – I use my faves from Real Techniques or NIMA.
How do you keep looking cool in the sun?
