If you were a kid in the 80s, Weird Al’s takeoff of Michael Jackson’s Beat it – Eat it – is something that’s probably burned into your consciousness. It wasn’t his first pop parody; he’d previously done Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll as I Love Rocky Road (snigger), but it was definitely the one that catapulted him to a global, mainstream audience.
And every few years, Weird Al reappears, with a whole new bunch of song homages. Like this week, when he’s rolling out a whopper eight from his new album Mandatory Fun, complete with videos. His stchick is use the tune and go some place else with the lyrics, so, so far we’ve had Happy reworked as Tacky; sample lyric, “I would live tweet a funeral and take selfies with the deceased” and Happy redone as Handy: “I’m so handy, everyone says so, I’ll grout your bathroom, resurface your patio.”
Getting why I like him so?
Tacky aka Pharrell’s Happy
Handy aka Iggy Azalea’s Fancy2>
Word Crimes aka Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines
Foils aka Lorde’s Royals
But there’s more. LOTS more. Like some of my top faves 4 eva, such as:
Jurassic Park, in the style of McArthur Park
“I admit it’s kinda eerie, But this proves my chaos theory.” Plus, the video is claymation. Claymation!
Prob don’t have to tell you what this one’s about.
Do you love Weird Al as much me?
