How about, instead of the all-over-blue hue at Marc Jacobs, you just paint yer lashes cobalt instead? Eureka!
What if, I wondered anxiously, this was it for me and summer beauty?
As it chucked down rain over the bank holiday weekend and I painted my nails a blackened teal, I had a sobering Carrie Bradshaw moment. What if, I wondered anxiously, this was it for me and summer beauty?
I’d had such glorious technicoloured hopes, but got stuck in a happy little bronze eye/bright lip summery routine. Which would be fine – apart from the shameful neglecting of shiny new season products and trends.
So if and when our Mini Heat Wave manages to materialise, here are the trends I’ll be rocking before the sun finally sets on the Irish summer.
We’ve the rest of the year to go back to black, but a teeny tiny window in which to break out that colourful mascara. Perhaps the Vitamin D goes rushing to my head, but suddenly, in the sunshine, an aquatic flash feels like an excellent idea.
Impressively pigmented, L’Oreal Paris’ Miss Manga in Pop Turquoise, €11.99, is ideal for some fun in the sun. Want something a little more subtle? Try Kate Moss for Rimmel Idol Eyes, €9.49: the blackened base means that the colours – Eye Rock Sapphire, Amethyst and Emerald – are only really discernable in the sun.
Juiced Up Lips
A sheer, shiny slick of carefree colour – see Maybelline’s SS14 version for Lacoste above – is the very thing for lounging by the Liffey. Clarins are great at gloss – the Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Gel is summer in a tube – and Chanel’s summer Glossimers are luminously lovely, but there are plenty of budget beauties that deserve your face-time, too.
Max Factor’s Colour Elixir glosses, €9.99, are sheer and shiny and pleasingly easy to wear, with zero gloopiness, whereas the NYX butter glosses, €6.49 are thicker but feel nice and nourishing on the lips. Catrice, Essence and NYC do some brilliant shiny lip stuff that they’re practically giving away, and the Bourjois Effet 3D lipgloss has been recently revamped so it’s even lovelier than ever.
Whether it’s a feline flick or smudged into and under your lower waterline, a loud liner can look modern and fresh; just keep everything else quite pared back, like this SS14 beauty look from Pierce Fionda from LFW.
There’s a great turquoise and purple in the Bourjois Contour Clubbing Waterproof range, €6.69 a pop, or for a double-whammy, look to Smashbox; their Santigolden Age collection has two creamy double-ended pencils in blue/gold or yellow/mint, for €19. Catrice also have a great felt-tip pen liner, Mr. Blue Sky, which is a teeny €3.69.
