Layering’s never easy, whether it’s clothes or accessories. Nope, it’s something that even the most insouciant dresser will have taken time ad energy to get right, no matter how ‘oh, this old thing?’ their finished outfit looks.

But taking the time pays off – plus it’s one chance to put that bloody Chanel maxim about taking one thing off before you leave the house to rest – because the results can be spectacular, allowing you to shop your stash on the regular, mix your metals and combine high end with highstreet.

This gallery features five street stye-inspired looks to layer. Will you?

Fine chains with small charms attached work excellently with a crisp white shirt that's buttoned low. Fake it easily with Topshop's three-strand take. It's around €40, and takes the gueswork out of chain-combining.

Do lo-high with confidence. This look proves you can wear delicate pieces with knits, and patterned ones at that. By Boe Tiny Bow Chain Necklace, €59, at Loulerie, and gold ball long pendant, €11, at ASOS.

The layer-look doesn't have to be delicates: this works just as well with tougher, blingier pieces too. Try mixing metals with two statement necklaces from Forever 21: the Shining Armor Bib Necklace is €7.90, while the Mesh Chain and Coin Bib Necklace is €8.95.

Three vari-length chains work really well with this open shirt and blazer look. New Irish jewellery designer V Victoria does a clever double necklace in mixed metals for €55, or check Tiffany's rose gold beaded chain, €350, and Chupi's Fly Away With Me Bird Maxi Necklace in Gold, €139, for two more ways to wear the look with added texture.

These statements work because they're layered over casual buttoned-up denim. Look to Monki for cheap links, where the Rebecka necklace is just €12, and find an arrowheaded spike collar at New Look for €12.99.
