Primers are a lot like lingerie

I often get asked whether primers are worth the hype. If so which ones are worth it; and the best way I’ve found to answer is that they’re a lot like lingerie – find the right one and it can change everything.

Whether you’re looking to smooth out fine lines, reduce oil, or brighten skin tone, there are expensive primers, everyday and budget picks as well as all matter of in-betweens that’ll bridge the gap between skincare and makeup for a flawless, longer lasting base.

Of course, there are some duds out there too (we won’t mention them!) but I’m sticking to my tried and tested ones below:

  1. BEST FOR HYDRATION
RMK Make Up Base: My top pick for an all rounder, the light fluid texture feels like finest silk on your skin and leaves a veil of moisture that foundations just glide over to create a luminous glow.
  2. BEST CULT CLASSIC
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm: Worn as a pre-makeup mask or as a primer I love this. Think Spanx, but for your face; Beauty Flash Balm is a cult classic with good reason. Use if you want to smooth, tighten, illuminate and brighten skin for a fresh-faced finish.
  3. BEST FOR OILY SKIN
Philosophy The Present: Look like you have perfect skin (even if you don’t) with this unique, antibacterial, oil-free primer that creates a fine, invisible layer that smooths out lines, uneven texture and visible pores. A great choice for anyone who suffers with break-outs or problematic skin.
  4. BEST BUDGET BUY
Rimmel Fix & Perfect: Mattifying, illuminating, resurfacing and more besides, this primer offers a whole lot for its price tag making it my high street gem. Perfect for everyday use and for those who have more good skin days than bad.
  5. BEST COMPLEXION ENHANCING
Stila One Step Illuminate: For lacklustre skin that needs a pick-me-up, this primer is ideal. Three illuminating bronze shades blend together to create a warm base. A great choice for anyone who finds their complexion needs perking up over the winter months.
